The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is all about making it easier for people with disabilities to live normal, fulfilling lives. NDIS eligibility therefore usually covers a wide spectrum of cases and circumstances. It's worth investing the time and effort to see if you are eligible and get started on making an application.

NDIS Eligibility Requirements

To determine whether you are eligible, consider the following NDIS eligibility requirements:

  • You must be under the age of 65. (though some exceptions may be made to this based on individual circumstances)
  • You are a citizen, resident, or permanent resident of Australia.
  • You meet the requirements for disability or early intervention.

These requirements include the following enquiries:

  • Do you frequently require the assistance of another person or equipment to perform daily tasks because of a permanent impairment or condition?
  • Do you usually need support from a person or assistive equipment so you can:
    • understand and be understood by others?
    • make and keep friends, as well as deal with feelings and emotions?
    • understand, remember, and learn new things?
    • get out of bed and move around the house and outside?
    • take a bath or shower, dress, and eat?
    • do daily tasks, manage money, and make decisions?

You may be eligible if you answered yes to any of the above questions. If not, consider the following questions to see if you qualify for early intervention funding:

  • Do you require assistance now in order to reduce your future support requirements?

To comply with the NDIS early intervention rules, you must:

  • have a permanent (lifelong) impairment or condition; or
  • be a child under the age of six with a developmental delay that requires more assistance with self-care, communication, learning, or motor skills than another child of the same age.

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you may be eligible for early intervention to:

  • Reduce the severity of your impairment, condition, or developmental delay.
  • Prevent the severity of your impairment or condition from worsening.
  • Strengthen your informal supports, such as assisting a carer to continue to support you.

What's the next step?

If you feel that you meet the NDIS eligibility requirements, and you aren’t already receiving disability support services, then the next step is to apply for consideration by the NDIS. Depending on your circumstances you will either follow the usual claim route or a simplified NDIS eligibility procedure. Simplified eligibility usually happens via the following situations:

  • Some people living in supported accomodation
  • Community access services
  • Specialist disability case management services
  • Respite services.
