FAQs about Multiple Sclerosis

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord which can lead to a wide range of symptoms.

The cause of MS remains unknown, but it often appears to be triggered by various environmental factors such as viruses or an individual's genetic makeup.

There are four main types of MS: Relapsing-remitting MS, Secondary Progressive MS, Primary Progressive MS and Progressive Relapsing MS. Each type presents various features and changes in the body. In Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS), individuals can experience periods of remission where there are mild symptoms like fatigue or vision problems, followed by acute episodes where more serious symptoms appear. Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS) is when RRMS worsens over time, while primary progressive MS (PPMS) is when the symptoms are consistently worsening from the onset of diagnosis. Progressive relapsing MS (PRMS), features bouts of severe acute exacerbations along with gradually progressive deficits between flare-ups.

In-home Multiple Sclerosis care and support is a wonderful way to ensure an individual with MS can stay safe, comfortable, and independent. It involves working closely with the individual, as well as their family, to create a plan that works for them.

A range of services are available to individuals receiving in-home MS support; from assistance with daily living activities such as meal preparation and transportation to providing emotional support for mental well-being.

In-home Multiple Sclerosis care and support creates opportunities for improved quality of life for those living with MS – something we strive for on a daily basis!

Applying for home care for multiple sclerosis should always be handled with patience and care. Engaging a home care provider can help provide the support, comfort and medical assistance to those living with MS.
